Back in 2001, we lost two amazing athletes. Not only amazing for their thoughts, contributions and accomplishments, but for who they were.

I remember the above photo the first time I saw it and being in awe of these two men. A bodybuilder myself, I could appreciate the intensity and discipline that it takes to look like this.

As you may or may not know the story, Mike affected both my bodybuilding career initially and my course of action in life… later in the 90s with his brilliance and simplicity of conveying that brilliance. He will always be a great man in my eyes!

Since then I have written a few books, coached a number of bodybuilders (and others) looking for help and… have attempted to give back that knowledge which was given to me by Mike.

Tomorrow and the day after, June 10th and 11th, are the anniversary s of the death of Mike and Ray Mentzer. This is the 3rd year that we have celebrated this anniversary and what they were about. Please join me.

In celebration of these two great men, I would like to give away my book, RU Serious-The Foundation. This book is my first ebook written and also one inspired by the Mentzer brothers.

Please pick up your free copy on the left hand side of the page after pressing the link below and receive it by inserting your information for delivery.

Go to http://mindbecomesmass.com

I want to thank you for helping me celebrate these special two days.

What I have found and what I am experimenting with is different levels of stress associated with high reps.

Now what the heck does that mean you say?

Well high reps can be achieved in a number of different ways and with different combinations of stress.

The most plain and simple is the first:

a straight set of high reps… say 15 – 25 reps – this is pretty straight forward and works very well in being affective and keeping stress down.

A 2 set super set of say 15 – 25 total reps combined – this is more stressful and has its advantages and disadvantages. If done with an isolation movement first followed by a compound movement, the focused muscle is pre-exhausted leaving little left for the second exercise that would normally be done using much more weight. If done with a compound movement first, followed by an isolation movement performed using a high intensity technique for a bodypart that was involved in the compound movement, then this can also be less stressful than a heavy set of low reps, yet very effective in stimulating an increase in both areas. Example- Lat Pulldowns supersetted with Nautilus Machine Holds/Partial Preachers Top Position.

A tri-set leading with a compound movement, followed by an isolation movement involving the target muscle, followed by a compound movement. This is most stressful, because in the first movement, a lot of weight can be used as in an exercise as leg presses. The stress decreases as you move through the tri-set.

It is the 3rd one that I will talk about as I think it is the most powerful for larger muscle groups like chest, back and legs with it’s effects on the smaller.

There is no denying that there are certain exercises that turn on the growth mechanism better than any other. I consider these to be… to name a few…

Dips and Presses

Deadlifts and different variations thereof

Squats and Leg Presses

Rows and High Pulls

In structuring your workouts progressively through the different stresses of high rep training, you can manage the stress of your workouts based on the current stress of your lifestyle…while affecting overall condition.

No kidding…I wouldn’t take this lightly as it is all tied in at once. Not to mention the time spent in the gym in a busy lifestyle counts HUGE!

So let me give you an example exercise stack using no.3 :

TRISET to failure… (notice rep ranges)

Dips – 5-8 followed by

Partial Top Machine Flies – 6 – 10/or/Holds (10 seconds to failure) – followed by

Close Grip Benches – 6-10 (no rest superset to finish)

Total 17 – 28 reps

NOTE: In this combination above, much like the infamous leg workout that Arthur Jones utilized for young superstar Casey Viator, the entire complex is exhausted with the first exercise, yet depending on the triceps strength as the limiting factor, the chest may still not be Done! So, continuing with a high intensity training technique like Holds or Partials in the weak range would finish off the chest while allowing the triceps to regroup, yet would not hinder the grove associated with performing any heavy exercise when you move to high reps. The second exercise followed by the RIGHT triceps assistance movement like close grip bench presses (I like a close curling bar for these), actually enhances the squeeze of the prior hold partial as you move through to the top… allowing both a heavier/lighter accent for those of you who are powerbuilders and dont want to give up that initial heavier/low rep basic movement.

So what do you do next? Well I would say that in 28 reps and 2 – 3 minutes, you will have effectively stimulated your chest, shoulders, triceps, some lat directly and indirectly, your entire upper body. What else would you want to do?

I say REST! Go HOME!

In a few days I will give you another example, training the rest of the body. The bigger the groups the harder it is and more stressful. We must manage accordingly.

Stay tuned as I move you through some advanced high rep techniques.

If you want to learn or know more about high intensity training, or would like to find out how it came from the beginning to here, you can find it all here at high intensity training workout. Don’t pass this up, I am getting ready to make some changes regarding this deal.

Wishing you the best,

There has been a lot of questions lately about diet from my High Intensity Training Forum.

There is an ongoing desire to not only be strong and muscular but also to be lean.

It is easier than you think!

Below is a link that will lead you to what I consider to be right on in both building muscle and fat loss. Right in line with your own genetics.

I know on my forum we talk about fat loss and muscle gain and of course carb loading prior to workout, but this is the foundation of dieting put forth in what I consider to be a perfect manner.

So if you have questions about muscle building… come to me. If you have questions on how to combine muscle building with a lean body, this is what I recommend…it is in line with my own diet philosophy.
Click Here! to discover the Solution.

Enjoy!

Best regards,

There are many changes a workout goes through based on data gathered from your log book, tools used like “The Two Day Rule Rules” etc.

The key is becoming unattached emotionally and to get in analyze mode.

Once you look at the entire picture, you will see if a change needs to be made.

Then the question is…
Do I reduce volume?
Do I reduce crossover?

What is the logical next step, based on my goals?

It is important to change one thing at a time, unless you have experience with larger changes, such as less crossover, where entire workout routines need change.

Remember, we ride a fine line on the fence edge to get the most stimulation with a particular allowance of training time/frequency.

In Mind Becomes Mass I try to put you in my head to allow you to think through these questions.

With my new work with high rep training, the core has not changed a great deal, however, there are a few twists and turns and management that you must do for your workouts.

Unfortunately I am not to a point where I can release a book to cover this, however, I have workout management solutions which works like a charm for the HIT athlete.

Remember, you have all the tools in front of you! Use them.

To your success,
Bill

I find it pretty amazing these days still how High Intensity Training is so confusing to the many…

How some are still stuck in the volume side or inbetween, not understanding how direct and straight forward the human body is to adapting.

How in their search for answers, they get stuck in thinking that it is just the workout that is their holy grail… never realizing that their body is in a constant state of flux… and in that there are adjustments that must be made, while using the my Holy Grail… taught to me by one of the best trainers and Olympian bodybuilders of our time, Mike Mentzer.

IT IS ALL ABOUT STRESS

Folks, it is all about managing stress and working with your genetics. What may work great for Joey Big Arms down the block may be too much for you to get the same results…

Question: “Are you saying that it goes back to a crap shoot like with the volume guys?”

Answer: “NO… what I am saying is based on your exercise experience, genetics, injuries, failures and successes, knowledge and understanding… a base line High Intensity Workout must be created as a baseline!

“In my latest book, Mind Becomes Mass: Beyond Time – The Final Approach, I try to get you in my head to groom you to understand how I think and manage clients from a beginner / baseline to a competitive bodybuilder.

It is imperative to your success that you understand the flux and use the tools given… like the “Two Day Rule”

You can also listen to a one on one interview with Dave Durrell of High Intensity Nation that talks about it here: Dave Durrell and Bill Sahli talk… High Intensity Training!

MY PERSONAL NOTE ABOUT DAVE DURRELL

I want to take time to mention Dave and thank him again for this interview with me and the amazing site that he maintains. His efforts alone, move the incredible knowledge that we old hold true, to those that need it.

Thank you Dave! Visit his amazing site at the link above.

STRESS CONTINUED

Creating a baseline will give you a starting point using the theory. Remember, it is not a set and forget step. Based on your training log you can fine tune the next course of action.

With my clients and myself (and training partner), it is key to use these tools to make small changes as necessary. This is why I created Elite Jr. Workout Solutions as a way to manage athletes as they change and progress. Once in a while I get a tough one with poor genetics and some with amazing genetics, but whatever the level, management is a definite to exploit your genetic potential.

RECENT WORK

Recently I have worked with higher reps in the search for a lower stress alternative in High Intensity Training and have been 200% successful!

What has been underscored is exactly what I already knew from my knowledge and understanding the Theory Of High Intensity Training.

Because of this I have found it possible to design low stress high intensity workouts for athletes with redundant injury symptoms, middle to senior athletes who are not recovering as they did in their 20′s… along with those who have existing high stress lives.

All without missing a beat… meaning, making great progress despite the lower weights employed. In fact, what I am finding is they are achieving higher reps 20 – 25 with the weights they previously used for 6- 10 and they are ecstatic! AND SO AM I!

I personally use the high rep approach at the present time and love it.

I have some knew work in progress, however I have not determined a completion date, BUT… until then, if you would like to take advantage of my work immediately, you can reach me here… Elite Jr. Workout Solutions

Remember, you are always in a state of flux… as you get stronger there must be small changes at certain intervals to compensate for those changes taking place in the body.

Wishing you the best!

Bill Sahli

PS: Me, relaxed prior to a high intensity, low stress, high rep workout!

While talking to my former training partner… Dr. Todd, he quickly reminded me that whenever we trained together in a brutal workout, and Dr. T complained of a wiped out body part due to high intensity training… my response would be…

IT’LL STOP HURTING WHEN THE PAIN GOES AWAY!

I never much cared about belly aching when going through a super high intensity workout Bill Sahli style but found that many of my partners did LOL.

No problem, only a few were able to stand the heat of the stove… Todd was one of them.

BACK IN THE DAY

Back in 2001 I had to go through some very extensive shoulder surgery due to a torn rotor cuff with a host of other complications to go along with it. The orthopedic surgeon, one of the best in his field of sports medicine told me that I would never train again. YA RIGHT! Well I proved him wrong in so many ways including self rehabilitating the shoulder(s).

In doing so I learned so much and just recently learned so much more.

THE LAST REP IS THE MOST PRODUCTIVE REP ALWAYS

We will all agree that the first rep of any set is not the most important rep, rather, it is the last rep of the set… that almost impossible one that creates the stimulus that turns on the growth mechanism of the body. Growing up in a powerlifting gym the reps in our sets were very low and there were not many sets to be sure, but I was about to discover some important amazing twists when it comes to bodybuilding and strength training.

It does not matter how many warm up reps you do prior to the last almost impossible rep that turns on the growth mechanism of the body… just that you do it!

The following is a brief account of this concept, namely HIGH REP HIGH INTENSITY TRAINING!

FROM MY personal log book.

I am 53 years young and will be 54 in August.

I have been training since 1971 and competing shortly after that.

That is 40 years or 4 decades!

I started experimenting with high reps in my first workout on December 13, 2010.

I am not a high rep guy by any means! I don’t like them and there is a huge variance in my strength between a low rep set and a high rep set.

There was a time when I would rather do a 600 pound squat than a set of 10 with 300. The fact is that anything over 5 or more reps for me is a chore and I give up a huge amount of weight/strength. EXAMPLE: 300 for 10 would be harder than a single with 600 pounds on the squat.

So here we go comparisons… look closely:

December 13, 2010

Flies – 40 pounds x 14 reps (told you I give up a lot on reps)

March 3, 2011 – Almost 3 months later…

Flies – 80 pounds for 20 reps ( doubled the weight and got 6 more reps) WOW

December 15, 2010

Machine Rows (another heavy machine, yuk! … just comparison of numbers) 135 x 19 reps

February 21, 2011

Machine Rows 175 x 15 reps (40 pound increase in 2 months- 6 workouts!)

THIS ONE IS AMAZING BECAUSE OF MY SHOULDER SURGERY

Lateral Machine

Dec 27, 2010 – 50 x 17

Jan 7, 2011 – 50 x 28

Jan 18,2011 – 60 x 34 reps

Jan 27, 2011 – 70 pounds x 40 reps

Feb 6, 2011 – 90 pounds x 42 reps

Feb 21, 2011 – 110 pounds x 21 reps

That is a 60 pound increase and 4 reps, over a 100% increase in 2 months.

GREAT RESULTS

The biggest factor is managing the stress of the workout. As you can see… starting out with light weight is far from stressful but as you progress and begin to use heavier weights for high reps, the workout must be managed.

I personally test myself every day and manage my workouts and that of my clients continually… it is always changing.

My bodyfat has reduced considerably (not that I was carrying much but without trying my body has adjusted.) and am fuller (and stronger as you can see).

This is not for the faint hearted but it is for…

Athletes that have incurred prior injuries because of the lower stress

Bodybuilders who have stagnated in their progress as it takes less of an inroad reserved for growth

Middle Age athletes who feel their recovery is not what it used to be because it leaves more for overcompensation

HIT Athletes who have a stressful lifestyle or ANY HIT athlete that wants to trade hard for smart! … And STILL train like a warrior…

STAY TUNED

I am in the process of writing a book detailing this technological twist of High Intensity Training and it will be released as soon as it is done.

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO WANT TO BE THE FIRST

I am using this technology right now with my phone training clients with great results.

Do you want to be ahead of the wave?…

go to this link. High Intensity Training Workout

***As part of customizing a workout AND exercises specifically for you, I will do so using the same testing I do with my Elite clients. If you want to continue on I can actually test and tell you the next time you train… no guess work. Only for the Elite!

So if U R Serious about your progress, contact me right away!

Best regards,
